Why We Exist

Driving is a highly complex task. It requires a combination of visual, physical, cognitive and psychosocial skills in a rapidly changing environment. Drivers have a responsibility to not only ensure the safety of them themselves, but also the safety of passengers and the wider community.

There are a number of medical conditions that can affect ability and safety with driving.

Medical conditions

That may affect ability and safety with driving include:

Epilepsy

Stroke

Acquired brain injury

Diabetes

Musculoskeletal conditions

Drug and Alcohol problems

If you hold a Queensland Drivers License you are required by law to report any medical condition that may affect your driving to the department of transport, and a medical certificate may be required.

The treating doctor may then refer to a specialist Occupational Therapy Driving Assessor to determine the impact of the medical condition on the ability to drive.

At East Coast Driver Rehab we work collaboratively with our clients to understand the individual’s driving goals and then functionally assess the impact of the medical condition on driving.

Older Drivers

The aging process can also affect ability to drive safely. In Queensland, if you are aged 75 and over you must carry a current Medical Certificate for Motor Vehicle Driver at all times when driving. This is then reviewed every 12 months by the treating Doctor.

More information about safe driving when you are aged 75 and over can be found here

Determining fitness to drive

(information for health professionals)

Information for health professionals in relation to determining fitness to drive can be found on the Austroads website here

If you are uncertain of the impact of any medical condition on the person’s ability to drive safely, the person should be referred to a specialist Occupational Therapy Driving Assessor for further assessment.

East Coast Driver Rehab provides a timely, efficient and high quality assessment process for clients. Advice can then be provided to health professionals to assist with the Medical Certificate.
